        Let the Children Be

'Twas Halloween night and all through the sky,
The clouds hid the moon as the bats glided by.
I was dressed all in white in my mama's old sheet,
Walking with friends down the ghost-haunted street.

All the kids were dressed in bright costumed array,
While flashlights and street lights guided our way.
We giggled and laughed as we hurried to each door,
Ringing or knocking, then laughing some more.

There were pumpkins aglow and skeletons dangling,
Scarecrows and shadows and silver chains clanging.
Grownups in masked faces opened doors in greeting,
As we stood with our bags and waited for treating.

Some people say that we should not have this night,
That too many kids are harmed by the sights or the fright -
But it's the one time a year when we can pretend to be
Someone else for a while, not you - not even me.

-Let them celebrate now, as the bats glide on by,
For childhood is brief, like the blink of an eye.
Listen to their laughter and let the children be
Someone else for a while, not you and not even me.

        ~Judith A. Lindberg

The Spooks Are Out Tonight - sung to "The Farmer in the Dell"

        The spooks are out tonight,
        The spooks are out tonight,
Best beware or they'll give you a scare.
        The spooks are out tonight.

        Additional verses:
        The goblins are out tonight
        The bats are out tonight
        The ghosts are out tonight
        The skeletons are out tonight

        ~Sandra Mohn

Three Black Cats - sung to "Three Blind Mice"

Three black cats, three black cats,
In black hats, in black hats.
They all jumped into the Halloween brew,
They teased the ghosts and the goblins too.
Did you ever hear such a hullabaloo
        On Halloween?

        ~Tamara Clohessy

Halloween Surprise - sung to "Sing a Song of Sixpence"

        First you take a pumpkin
(arms for large pumpkin before tummy)
        Big and round and fat
Then you cut the top off
        (pretend to slice)
        That will make the hat
        (hand on head)
        Then you hollow out the
        Nose and mouth and eyes.
(point to nose, mouth, and eyes)
Show it to the children for a

Sometimes I Like To Walk In The Dark - sung to "Pop Goes the Weasel"

Sometimes I like to walk in the dark.
I like to shout and scream.
I sneak behind somebody I know
        BOO! It's Halloween.

        ~Frank Dally

If You're a Ghost and You Know It - sung to "If You're Happy and You Know It"

If you're a ghost and you know it,
        Then say "Boo!"
If you're a ghost and you know it,
        Then say "Boo!"
If you're a ghost and you know it,
And you really want to show it,
If you're a ghost and you know it,
        Then say "Boo!"

        Additional verses:
If you're a cat and you know it, then say "Meow"
If you're a bat and you know it, then flap your wings
If you're a skeleton and you know it, then shake your bones

        A Halloween Counting Poem

One scary witch is coming down the street.
She's tapping at doors and calling,
        "Trick or Treat!"

        Two black cats
        Appear at the gate,
        With arched-up backs,
        They watch and wait.

Three jack-o-lanterns sit grinning in a row,
        Their candles flicker
        An eerie glow.

Four bats awake and begin to fly,
        Swishing and swooping
        Across the sky.

Five tree stumps in the shadows deep
        Crouch like monsters
        Ready to leap.

Six orange leaves float down through the air,
        They rustle and whisper,
        "Beware, beware!"

Seven gray clouds hide the moon from sight,
        They stop, they hover,
        They darken the night.

Eight white objects twist and twine.
        Are they ghosts or sheets
        On a line?

Nine little field mice scatter and run.
        Spooky nights
        Are not much fun.

Ten owls smile-- they know, you see.
        It's Halloween and the
        Witch is ME!!

        All around the haunted House,
        The bat chased the goblin.
        The ghost floated overhead
        Scat! Went the black cat
